American new wave band formed in Boston in 1976. Lineup: Ric Ocasek (vocals/rhythm guitar), Benjamin Orr (vocals/bass), Elliot Easton (lead guitar), Greg Hawkes (keyboards), and David Robinson (drums). Pioneers of merging power-pop hooks with synthesizer-driven new wave production.
Released six studio albums between 1978 and 1987, including the self-titled debut (1978), Candy-O (1979), Shake It Up (1981), and Heartbeat City (1984). The band dissolved in 1988. Orr died in 2000. The surviving members reunited (with Todd Rundgren replacing Orr on vocals) as the New Cars and later released Move Like This (2011) as the Cars. Ocasek died in 2019. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018.
