American guitarist born Steven Siro Vai on June 6, 1960, in Carle Place, New York. Studied under Joe Satriani. Member of Frank Zappa's band (1980-1983), Alcatrazz (1985), and David Lee Roth's solo band (1985-1989) before launching his solo career. Distinguished by his virtuoso technique and his use of seven-string guitars (Ibanez Universe, his signature model, was one of the first commercial seven-strings).
Released over a dozen studio albums between Flex-Able (1984) and Inviolate (2022). Commercial peak: Passion and Warfare (1990). Three Grammy Awards. Continues to tour internationally.
