English musician (1943-2001). Born in Liverpool. Best known as lead guitarist of the Beatles (1960-1970), where he was the youngest member and the band's chief Indian-music advocate. Pursued a successful solo career after the Beatles' dissolution and was a founding member of the Traveling Wilburys (with Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, and Jeff Lynne).
Twelve solo studio albums between Wonderwall Music (1968, while still in the Beatles) and the posthumous Brainwashed (2002). Commercial peak: All Things Must Pass (1970, a triple LP), Living in the Material World (1973), and Cloud Nine (1987, featuring "Got My Mind Set on You"). Died of lung cancer in November 2001. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist (2004) and with the Beatles (1988).
