English progressive rock supergroup formed in 1970. Trio of Keith Emerson (keyboards, 1944-2016), Greg Lake (vocals/bass/guitar, 1947-2016), and Carl Palmer (drums). Emerson and Palmer previously played in the Nice and Atomic Rooster respectively; Lake came from King Crimson.

Ten studio albums starting with Emerson, Lake & Palmer (1970). Commercial peak: Tarkus (1971), Pictures at an Exhibition (1971, adapted from Modest Mussorgsky's classical suite), Trilogy (1972), and Brain Salad Surgery (1973, featuring the 30-minute "Karn Evil 9"). Emerson and Lake both died in 2016 — Emerson by suicide in March, Lake of cancer in December.
