Jamaican reggae band formed in Kingston in 1963. Original lineup: Bob Marley (vocals/guitar, 1945-1981), Peter Tosh (guitar/vocals, 1944-1987), and Bunny Wailer (vocals, 1947-2021). Tosh and Wailer departed in 1974; subsequent lineups were typically billed as "Bob Marley & The Wailers" with various backing musicians.
Twelve studio albums between The Wailing Wailers (1965) and Uprising (1980). Foundational releases include Catch a Fire (1973), Burnin' (1973), Natty Dread (1974), Rastaman Vibration (1976), and Exodus (1977, which Time magazine called the best album of the 20th century). Bob Marley died of cancer in May 1981. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.
