American rock trio formed in Houston, Texas in 1969. Lineup of Billy Gibbons (guitar/vocals), Dusty Hill (bass/vocals), and Frank Beard (drums) remained intact for over 50 years until Hill's death in 2021. Distinguished by Texas blues-rock roots and (after 1979) the matching beards of Gibbons and Hill — Beard, ironically, sported only a mustache.
The 1973 album Tres Hombres delivered their first hit ("La Grange"). The band's commercial peak came with the synthesizer-heavy Eliminator (1983) and Afterburner (1985), driven by MTV-rotation videos featuring custom hot rods. Fifteen studio albums total. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. Hill was replaced by longtime guitar tech Elwood Francis in 2021.
