American alternative rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1992. Founding lineup: Rivers Cuomo (vocals/guitar), Patrick Wilson (drums), Matt Sharp (bass), and Jason Cropper (guitar, replaced by Brian Bell before the debut). Sharp departed in 1998; Scott Shriner replaced him in 2001.

Their 1994 self-titled debut (the "Blue Album," produced by the Cars' Ric Ocasek) sold over 3 million copies on the strength of singles "Buddy Holly," "Undone — The Sweater Song," and "Say It Ain't So." Subsequent releases include Pinkerton (1996), the second self-titled "Green Album" (2001), and a long, prolific catalog through SZNZ: Winter (2022). Sixteen studio albums total.
