American rock band formed in Long Island, New York in 1966. Long-running lineup historically: Mark Stein (vocals/keyboards, b. 1947), Vince Martell (guitar, b. 1945), Tim Bogert (bass/vocals, 1944-2021), and Carmine Appice (drums/vocals, b. 1946). Distinguished by their psychedelic-influenced, heavily reworked covers of contemporary pop songs.
Released five studio albums during their original run between Vanilla Fudge (1967) and Rock & Roll (1969). Best-known recording: their seven-minute slow-tempo reinvention of the Supremes' "You Keep Me Hangin' On" (1967). Bogert and Appice subsequently formed Cactus and Beck, Bogert & Appice. Tim Bogert died in 2021 of cancer.
