Same artist as the Mothers of Invention — abbreviated credit variation. American rock band formed in Pomona, California in 1964 by Frank Zappa (1940-1993). Long-running lineup historically: Zappa (vocals/guitar) with rotating personnel including Don Preston (keyboards), Ian Underwood (woodwinds/keyboards), Aynsley Dunbar (drums), and many others.
Released over a dozen studio albums credited to the Mothers / Mothers of Invention between Freak Out! (1966) and One Size Fits All (1975). Zappa increasingly began crediting albums to himself alone (rather than to the Mothers) starting in the early 1970s.
