American punk rock band formed in Forest Hills, Queens in 1974. Original lineup: Joey Ramone (vocals), Johnny Ramone (guitar), Dee Dee Ramone (bass), Tommy Ramone (drums); all members adopted the surname Ramone. Widely credited with codifying the American punk template — short songs, fast tempos, distorted guitar, minimal solos.
Their 1976 self-titled debut was recorded in February of that year for $6,400. Subsequent albums Leave Home (1977), Rocket to Russia (1977), and Road to Ruin (1978) refined the formula. The band toured almost continuously through 1996, releasing 14 studio albums total. The original four members all died between 2001 and 2014. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.
