English singer-songwriter and musician born February 13, 1950, in Chobham, Surrey. Founding lead vocalist of Genesis (1967-1975) before launching a successful solo career. Distinguished by his innovative use of world music, his early adoption of music video (with director Stephen R. Johnson on Sledgehammer, 1986), and his founding of the WOMAD festival and Real World Records.
Released 11 solo studio albums starting with Peter Gabriel (1977, the first of four self-titled albums). Commercial peak: So (1986, featuring "Sledgehammer" and "In Your Eyes"). Subsequent peaks: Up (2002) and i/o (2023, his first new pop album in 21 years). Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Genesis (2010) and as a solo artist (2014).
