English rock band formed in Surrey in 1967. Original lineup: Peter Gabriel (vocals, 1967-1975), Tony Banks (keyboards), Mike Rutherford (bass/guitar), Anthony Phillips (guitar, 1967-1970), and various drummers. Phil Collins (drums, vocals after Gabriel) joined in 1970; Steve Hackett (guitar) joined in 1971 and departed in 1977.

Fifteen studio albums between From Genesis to Revelation (1969) and Calling All Stations (1997). The band's stylistic evolution from progressive-rock to pop is unusually pronounced — Selling England by the Pound (1973) and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (1974) represent the Gabriel-era progressive peak; Invisible Touch (1986) and We Can't Dance (1991) represent the Collins-era pop peak. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.
