American progressive rock band formed in Topeka, Kansas in 1973. Classic lineup: Steve Walsh (vocals/keyboards), Robby Steinhardt (vocals/violin), Kerry Livgren (guitar/keyboards), Rich Williams (guitar), Dave Hope (bass), and Phil Ehart (drums). Distinguished by Steinhardt's violin and the band's blend of American hard rock with British prog influences.
Sixteen studio albums starting with the 1974 self-titled debut. Commercial peak: Leftoverture (1976, featuring "Carry On Wayward Son") and Point of Know Return (1977, featuring "Dust in the Wind"). Multiple lineup changes since the 1980s; Williams and Ehart are the only continuous members. Steinhardt died in 2021.
