Australian rock band formed in Sydney in 1977. Original lineup: Michael Hutchence (vocals, died 1997), Andrew Farriss (keyboards), Jon Farriss (drums), Tim Farriss (guitar), Kirk Pengilly (saxophone/guitar), and Garry Gary Beers (bass). Three of the six members were Farriss brothers.
Twelve studio albums starting with the self-titled 1980 debut. Commercial peak: Kick (1987, multi-platinum, featuring "Need You Tonight," "Devil Inside," and "Never Tear Us Apart") and X (1990). Hutchence died by suicide in November 1997. The band continued with various vocalists including J.D. Fortune (chosen via the 2005 reality show Rock Star: INXS) before dissolving in 2012.
