Long-running songwriting partnership with lyricist Bernie Taupin (since 1967) has produced the majority of his catalog. Among the best-selling music artists of all time, with over 300 million units sold worldwide.

Released 32 studio albums between Empty Sky (1969) and The Lockdown Sessions (2021). Commercial peak: Honky Château (1972), Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player (1973), Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (1973), and Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy (1975). The 1997 "Candle in the Wind 1997" tribute to Princess Diana remains the best-selling single in history. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.
