English rock band formed in Birmingham in 1970 by Jeff Lynne, Roy Wood, and Bev Bevan. Wood departed in 1972; Lynne assumed primary creative control. The band's signature sound combined Beatles-influenced melody, classical strings, and emerging synthesizer technology.
Thirteen studio albums under the original ELO banner between 1971 and 1986. Commercial peak releases included A New World Record (1976), Out of the Blue (1977, a double LP), Discovery (1979), and Time (1981). After a long hiatus, Lynne revived the project as Jeff Lynne's ELO starting with Zoom (2001). Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017.
