American rock band formed in Omaha, Nebraska in 1988. Lineup: Nick Hexum (vocals/guitar), SA Martinez (vocals/turntables), Tim Mahoney (guitar), Aaron "P-Nut" Wills (bass), and Chad Sexton (drums). The five-piece lineup has been continuous since 1992. Style fuses rock, reggae, hip-hop, and funk.
Fourteen studio albums starting with Music (1993). Commercial breakthrough: the 1995 self-titled "Blue Album," which sold over 3 million copies on the strength of "Down" and "All Mixed Up." Subsequent peaks: Transistor (1997) and Soundsystem (1999). Hosts the annual "311 Day" concerts on March 11 (3/11).
