American singer-songwriter born December 23, 1959, in Forbing, Louisiana. Distinguished by her fragile, child-like vocals and her songwriting drawing on folk, country, and gospel influences. Her 1992 diagnosis with multiple sclerosis inspired the Sweet Relief tribute albums (1993, 1996) — featuring Pearl Jam, Lou Reed, Lucinda Williams, and others covering her songs — to raise funds for uninsured musicians.
Released nine studio albums between Happy Come Home (1987) and Sings Some Ol' Songs (2002). Married to Mark Olson (the Jayhawks) 1996-2006. Continues to record and tour.
