American rock band formed in Niles, Michigan in 1964. Long-running lineup centered on Tommy James (vocals, born Thomas Gregory Jackson on April 29, 1947). Distinguished by their bubblegum-meets-psychedelia pop hits during the late 1960s.
Released six studio albums between Hanky Panky (1966) and Travelin' (1970). Commercial peak: a string of late-1960s hits including "Hanky Panky" (1966, #1), "I Think We're Alone Now" (1967), "Mony Mony" (1968), "Crimson and Clover" (1969, #1), and "Crystal Blue Persuasion" (1969). James's 2010 memoir Me, the Mob, and the Music recounted his career and Roulette Records label boss Morris Levy's mob connections.
