American rock band formed in Garfield, New Jersey in 1965 (renamed simply The Rascals in 1968). Lineup: Felix Cavaliere (vocals/keyboards, b. 1942), Eddie Brigati (vocals/percussion, b. 1945), Gene Cornish (guitar/vocals, b. 1944), and Dino Danelli (drums, 1944-2022). Distinguished by their fusion of R&B and rock — among the earliest white American bands to embrace what would later be called "blue-eyed soul."
Released seven studio albums between The Young Rascals (1966) and Search and Nearness (1971). Commercial peak: a string of mid-1960s hits including "Good Lovin'" (1966, #1), "Groovin'" (1967, #1), "A Beautiful Morning" (1968), and "People Got to Be Free" (1968, #1). Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997.
