English rock band formed in London in 1964. Classic lineup: Roger Daltrey (vocals), Pete Townshend (guitar), John Entwistle (bass), and Keith Moon (drums). Among the most influential rock acts of the 1960s and 1970s; pioneered the rock opera (Tommy, 1969; Quadrophenia, 1973) and Townshend's signature "windmill" guitar performance style.
Key albums: My Generation (1965), Tommy (1969), Live at Leeds (1970), Who's Next (1971), Quadrophenia (1973). Moon died in 1978; the band continued briefly with Kenney Jones before disbanding in 1983. Reunited intermittently through the 1980s-1990s. Entwistle died in 2002. Townshend and Daltrey have toured as The Who since. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990.
