American rock band formed in Chicago in 1988 by Billy Corgan (vocals/guitar) and James Iha (guitar). Original lineup also included D'arcy Wretzky (bass, 1988-1999) and Jimmy Chamberlin (drums, 1988-1996, 1999-2009, 2015-present). Among the central acts of 1990s alternative rock.
Thirteen studio albums starting with Gish (1991). Commercial peak: Siamese Dream (1993) and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (1995), the band's only #1 album — a double album that has sold over 10 million copies in the US. The band dissolved in 2000, reformed as a Corgan-led project in 2006, and reunited the original lineup (minus Wretzky) in 2018.
