British-American rock band formed in Hereford, England in 1978. Long-running lineup historically centered on Chrissie Hynde (vocals/guitar, b. September 7, 1951, Akron, Ohio). The original lineup also included James Honeyman-Scott (guitar, 1956-1982) and Pete Farndon (bass, 1952-1983), both of whom died young of drug overdoses.

Released 11 studio albums between Pretenders (1980) and Relentless (2023). Commercial peak: Pretenders (featuring "Brass in Pocket"), Pretenders II (1981), and Learning to Crawl (1984, featuring "Back on the Chain Gang" and "Middle of the Road"). Hynde has remained the only constant member. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005.
