English rock band formed in Birmingham in 1964. Long-running classic lineup: Justin Hayward (vocals/guitar, since 1966), John Lodge (bass/vocals, since 1966), Mike Pinder (keyboards, 1964-1978, died 2024), Ray Thomas (flute/vocals, 1964-2002, died 2018), and Graeme Edge (drums, 1964-2021, died 2021). Pioneers of progressive rock and the use of orchestral arrangement in rock recordings.

Sixteen studio albums. Their second album Days of Future Passed (1967), recorded with the London Festival Orchestra and featuring "Nights in White Satin," was a defining work of progressive rock. Subsequent peaks: In Search of the Lost Chord (1968), On the Threshold of a Dream (1969), and Seventh Sojourn (1972). Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018.
