American jazz ensemble formed in New York City in 1952. Long-running classic lineup: John Lewis (piano, 1920-2001), Milt Jackson (vibraphone, 1923-1999), Percy Heath (bass, 1923-2005), and Connie Kay (drums, 1927-1994). Distinguished by their fusion of bebop with European classical-music structural elements (Lewis's particular interest) and their formal concert-attire stage presentation.
Released numerous studio albums between Modern Jazz Quartet (1952) and Dedicated to Connie (1995, posthumously released). Critical peak: Django (1956, dedicated to Django Reinhardt), Fontessa (1956), and No Sun in Venice (1957). Continued performing together for over 40 years until Connie Kay's death in 1994 effectively ended the group.
