British synth-pop band formed in Sheffield in 1977. Long-running classic lineup after a 1980 split: Philip Oakey (vocals), Susan Ann Sulley (vocals, recruited from a discothèque), Joanne Catherall (vocals, also recruited from a discothèque), Jo Callis (synthesizers), Ian Burden (bass synth), and Philip Adrian Wright (slides/synthesizers). Distinguished by their early all-electronic instrumentation.
Released nine studio albums between Reproduction (1979) and Credo (2011). Commercial peak: Dare (1981, featuring the international #1 "Don't You Want Me"). Won the 1983 Grammy for Best New Artist. Continues to tour with Oakey, Sulley, and Catherall.
