American rock band formed in San Jose, California in 1970. Long-running lineup has rotated between two distinct configurations: the early Tom Johnston era (1970-1975, with the harder-rock signature sound) and the Michael McDonald era (1975-1982, with the bluer-eyed-soul direction). Both eras' lineups have toured together since 1989.
Released 15 studio albums between The Doobie Brothers (1971) and Liberté (2021). Commercial peak: The Captain and Me (1973), What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits (1974), Stampede (1975), and Minute by Minute (1978, featuring "What a Fool Believes," winner of the 1980 Grammy for Record of the Year and Song of the Year). Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020.
