American country band formed in Dallas in 1989 (officially the Dixie Chicks until 2020, when they shortened the name to The Chicks following the renewed racial-justice movement). Long-running classic lineup: Natalie Maines (vocals, joined 1995), Martie Maguire (fiddle/mandolin), and Emily Strayer (banjo/guitar, the latter two are sisters).
Released nine studio albums between Thank Heavens for Dale Evans (1990) and Gaslighter (2020). Commercial peak: Wide Open Spaces (1998, 13x platinum), Fly (1999, 10x platinum), and Home (2002, 6x platinum). After Maines's 2003 anti-Bush comment at a London show triggered a massive country-radio boycott, the band shifted toward broader Americana with Taking the Long Way (2006, Grammy for Album of the Year). 13 Grammy Awards.
