Canadian-American rock band formed in Toronto in 1968 (as a continuation of the Hawks, the longtime backing band for Ronnie Hawkins and later Bob Dylan). Lineup: Robbie Robertson (guitar, 1943-2023), Levon Helm (drums/vocals, 1940-2012), Rick Danko (bass/vocals, 1942-1999), Richard Manuel (piano/vocals, 1943-1986), and Garth Hudson (keyboards, 1937-2025). Foundational influence on roots rock and Americana.
Released 10 studio albums between Music from Big Pink (1968) and Jubilation (1998). Critical peak: Music from Big Pink and The Band (1969). Martin Scorsese's documentary The Last Waltz (1978) captured their 1976 farewell concert. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.
