British rock band formed in London in 1967 (originally as Tyrannosaurus Rex). Long-running lineup historically centered on Marc Bolan (vocals/guitar, 1947-1977) and Mickey Finn (percussion, 1947-2003). The defining band of the British glam rock movement.
Released 11 studio albums between My People Were Fair and Had Sky in Their Hair... But Now They're Content to Wear Stars on Their Brows (1968) and Dandy in the Underworld (1977). Commercial peak: Electric Warrior (1971, featuring "Get It On (Bang a Gong)" and "Jeepster") and The Slider (1972). Bolan died in a car accident in 1977 at age 29 (two weeks short of his 30th birthday).
