American indie rock band formed in Chapel Hill, North Carolina in 1989. Lineup: Mac McCaughan (vocals/guitar), Laura Ballance (bass), Jim Wilbur (guitar, since 1989), and various drummers — Jon Wurster joined in 1991 and remained. McCaughan and Ballance co-founded the influential indie label Merge Records in 1989.
Twelve studio albums starting with Superchunk (1990). Best-known releases include No Pocky for Kitty (1991), Foolish (1994), Here's Where the Strings Come In (1995), and Majesty Shredding (2010). Ballance retired from touring in 2013 due to hyperacusis; Jason Narducy handles bass on tour. The band has been continuously active.
