American rock band formed in Chicago in 1972. Long-running lineup historically centered on Dennis DeYoung (vocals/keyboards, until 1999), Tommy Shaw (vocals/guitar, since 1975), and James "JY" Young (guitar/vocals). Distinguished by their fusion of progressive rock with arena rock and their multiple-lead-vocalist approach.
Released 17 studio albums between Styx (1972) and Crash of the Crown (2021). Commercial peak: The Grand Illusion (1977), Pieces of Eight (1978), Cornerstone (1979, featuring "Babe"), and Paradise Theatre (1981, featuring "The Best of Times"). The 1983 rock opera Kilroy Was Here (featuring "Mr. Roboto") split the band internally and led to their initial breakup in 1984.
