English rock band formed in Greenwich, London in 1974. Long-running lineup centered on songwriting partners Chris Difford (lyrics/guitar) and Glenn Tilbrook (music/vocals/guitar). Other key members included Jools Holland (keyboards, 1974-1980, with later reunions) and a rotating rhythm section.
Fifteen studio albums starting with Squeeze (1978). Commercial peak: Cool for Cats (1979), Argybargy (1980), East Side Story (1981, produced by Elvis Costello), and Sweets from a Stranger (1982). The Difford-Tilbrook partnership has been compared to Lennon-McCartney by various critics; their songwriting is the band's defining feature.
