American rock band formed in Fullerton, California in 1978 by vocalist/guitarist Mike Ness — the band's only continuous member. Long-running classic lineup also included guitarist Dennis Danell (1978-2000, died 2000), bassist John Maurer (1984-2004), and drummer Charlie Quintana (2010-2018, died 2018).

Seven studio albums starting with Mommy's Little Monster (1983). Commercial peak: Social Distortion (1990, featuring "Story of My Life" and "Ball and Chain"), Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell (1992), and White Light, White Heat, White Trash (1996). Distinguished by their fusion of punk, rockabilly, and country influences. Danell died of a brain aneurysm in 2000.
