American heavy metal band formed in Des Moines, Iowa in 1995. Nine-member ensemble notable for performing in matching jumpsuits and individualized masks. Long-running lineup historically centered on Corey Taylor (vocals), Shawn "Clown" Crahan (percussion), Jim Root (guitar), and Mick Thomson (guitar). Founding bassist Paul Gray (1972-2010) and drummer Joey Jordison (1975-2021) both died young.
Released seven studio albums between Slipknot (1999) and The End, So Far (2022). Commercial peak: Iowa (2001), Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) (2004, Grammy for Best Metal Performance for "Before I Forget"), and .5: The Gray Chapter (2014, the first after Gray's death). One of the most commercially successful heavy metal bands of the 21st century.
