American thrash metal band formed in Huntington Park, California in 1981 by guitarists Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman, vocalist/bassist Tom Araya, and drummer Dave Lombardo. Among the foundational thrash metal bands of the 1980s.
Twelve studio albums between 1983 and 2015. Reign in Blood (1986) is widely considered one of the genre's most influential records. Subsequent peaks: South of Heaven (1988) and Seasons in the Abyss (1990). Hanneman died in 2013 from liver failure; replaced by Gary Holt of Exodus. Final farewell tour concluded in November 2019. The band has reunited briefly for select festival appearances since 2024.
