British band formed in Leeds in 1977. Long-running lineup centered on Green Gartside (vocals/guitar/songwriter). Style shifted from post-punk (their early Rough Trade era) to glossy synth-pop (their commercial-peak Virgin Records era of the mid-1980s).
Released five studio albums between Songs to Remember (1982) and White Bread Black Beer (2006). Commercial peak: Cupid & Psyche 85 (1985, featuring "Wood Beez" and "The Word Girl") and Provision (1988). Gartside collaborated with Miles Davis on "Oh Patti (Don't Feel Sorry for Loverboy)" (1988), Davis's last guest appearance.
