Canadian singer-songwriter born January 28, 1968, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Founded the touring festival Lilith Fair (1997-1999), featuring exclusively female solo artists and women-led bands — a defining event of late-1990s alternative pop. Three Grammy Awards across her career.

Released nine studio albums starting with Touch (1988). Commercial peak: Fumbling Towards Ecstasy (1993), Surfacing (1997, featuring "Building a Mystery" and "Adia"), and Afterglow (2003). Released the holiday album Wintersong (2006), which became one of the best-selling Christmas albums of the 2000s.
