American hip-hop group formed in New York City in 1985 (officially Salt-N-Pepa). Lineup: Cheryl "Salt" James, Sandra "Pepa" Denton, and DJ Spinderella (born Deidra Roper, joined 1987). Among the first commercially successful female hip-hop acts and pioneers of female hip-hop's pop crossover.
Released five studio albums between Hot, Cool & Vicious (1986) and Brand New (1997). Best-known recordings include "Push It" (1986), "Let's Talk About Sex" (1991), "Shoop" (1993), and "Whatta Man" (1993, with En Vogue). Won the 1995 Grammy for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for "None of Your Business."
