American country and bluegrass musician born July 18, 1954, in Cordell, Kentucky. First gained prominence as a member of Emmylou Harris's Hot Band (1977-1980) before launching a solo career.
Released over 20 studio albums spanning country and bluegrass between That's It! (1975) and Brand New Strings (2004) onward. Commercial peak: Highways & Heartaches (1982, featuring "Heartbroke") and Don't Cheat in Our Hometown (1983). Returned to traditional bluegrass with Bluegrass Rules! (1997), winning 15 Grammy Awards. Inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2018.
