American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer (1958-2016). Born Prince Rogers Nelson in Minneapolis, Minnesota. One of the most prolific and influential musicians of the late 20th century; instrumental in shaping funk, R&B, pop, and rock.
Released 39 studio albums during his lifetime, plus posthumous material from his "Vault" of unreleased recordings. Commercial peak: 1999 (1982), the Purple Rain film and soundtrack (1984), Around the World in a Day (1985), and Sign o' the Times (1987). Founded NPG (New Power Generation) as his backing band in 1990. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.
