English rock band formed in London in 1965. Original lineup: Syd Barrett (vocals/guitar, 1965-1968), Roger Waters (bass/vocals), Richard Wright (keyboards), Nick Mason (drums), and David Gilmour (guitar/vocals, joined 1968 replacing Barrett). One of the best-selling music artists of all time, with over 250 million units sold worldwide.
Fifteen studio albums between 1967 and 2014. Commercial peaks include The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), which has charted on Billboard for over 950 weeks, Wish You Were Here (1975), and the rock opera The Wall (1979). Roger Waters departed in 1985 in acrimony; the band continued under Gilmour with A Momentary Lapse of Reason (1987) and The Division Bell (1994). Wright died in 2008. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.
