American funk band formed in Plainfield, New Jersey in 1968 (as a continuation of the Parliaments, who released the 1967 single "(I Wanna) Testify"). Long-running ensemble led by George Clinton (b. July 22, 1941). Together with Funkadelic, formed the core of the P-Funk collective.
Released 10 studio albums between Osmium (1970) and Trombipulation (1980). Commercial peak: Mothership Connection (1975, featuring "P. Funk (Wants to Get Funked Up)" and "Give Up the Funk"), The Clones of Dr. Funkenstein (1976), and Funkentelechy vs. the Placebo Syndrome (1977, featuring "Flash Light"). Clinton's P-Funk collective was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997.
