American disco-funk band formed in New York City in 1976 by Nile Rodgers (guitar, b. September 19, 1952) and Bernard Edwards (bass, 1952-1996). Reformed under the "Nile Rodgers & Chic" name in 1996, after Edwards's death from pneumonia following a concert in Tokyo. Long-running configuration features Rodgers leading a touring band.
The original Chic released six studio albums between Chic (1977) and Believer (1983). Commercial peak: C'est Chic (1978, featuring "Le Freak") and Risqué (1979, featuring "Good Times," whose bassline became the foundation for "Rapper's Delight"). Rodgers's parallel production career has shaped major recordings for David Bowie, Madonna, Daft Punk, Diana Ross, INXS, and many others. The reformed Chic released It's About Time (2018). Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017.
