American indie rock band formed in Ruston, Louisiana in 1989. Long-running lineup centered on Jeff Mangum (vocals/guitar/songwriter). Member of the Elephant 6 Recording Company collective.
Released two studio albums: On Avery Island (1996) and In the Aeroplane Over the Sea (1998). The latter is widely regarded as one of the most acclaimed indie rock albums of the 1990s. Mangum withdrew from public life in 1999 and the band remained dormant until a reunion tour in 2013-2015. Mangum has subsequently kept a low public profile.
