American post-metal band formed in Oakland, California in 1985. Long-running lineup: Scott Kelly (vocals/guitar), Steve Von Till (vocals/guitar), Dave Edwardson (bass), Jason Roeder (drums), and Noah Landis (samples/synthesizer). Foundational influence on the post-metal and sludge metal genres.
Released 11 studio albums between Pain of Mind (1987) and Fires Within Fires (2016). Critical peak: Through Silver in Blood (1996), Times of Grace (1999), and A Sun That Never Sets (2001). The band has been on indefinite hiatus since 2019, when Scott Kelly publicly acknowledged having been emotionally and physically abusive to his family and stepped back from public performance.
