American singer-songwriter born October 26, 1963, in Jamestown, New York. First gained prominence as lead vocalist of 10,000 Maniacs (1981-1993) before launching a solo career.

Released eight solo studio albums starting with Tigerlily (1995, multi-platinum, featuring "Carnival" and "Wonder"). Critical peak: Tigerlily, Ophelia (1998), and Motherland (2001). The 2010 double album Leave Your Sleep set century-old poetry to original music. Continues to record and tour.
