British comedy troupe formed in 1969. Lineup: Graham Chapman (1941-1989), John Cleese (b. 1939), Terry Gilliam (b. 1940), Eric Idle (b. 1943), Terry Jones (1942-2020), and Michael Palin (b. 1943). Best known for the TV series Monty Python's Flying Circus (BBC, 1969-1974) and the films And Now for Something Completely Different (1971), Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975), Life of Brian (1979), and The Meaning of Life (1983).
Released numerous comedy albums including Monty Python's Previous Record (1972), Matching Tie and Handkerchief (1973), and Live at Drury Lane (1974). Eric Idle wrote and composed the stage musical Spamalot (2005, Tony Award for Best Musical), adapting Holy Grail for Broadway. The troupe reunited briefly in 2014 for the Monty Python Live (Mostly) O2 Arena shows.
