American industrial metal band formed in Chicago in 1981. Long-running lineup centered on Al Jourgensen (vocals/guitar/programming). Other key members include Paul Barker (bass/programming, 1986-2003) and various drummers. Foundational to industrial metal alongside KMFDM, Skinny Puppy, and Nine Inch Nails.
Fifteen studio albums starting with With Sympathy (1983, a synth-pop album Jourgensen has since disowned). Commercial peak: The Land of Rape and Honey (1988), The Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Taste (1989), and Psalm 69 (1992, featuring "Jesus Built My Hotrod"). The band dissolved in 2008, reformed in 2012, and has continued with various lineups since.
