American percussionist born September 11, 1943, in Brooklyn, New York. Member of the Grateful Dead (1967-1971, 1974-1995). After the Dead, has explored world percussion and ethnomusicology, frequently collaborating with the Smithsonian Folkways archive.
Released numerous solo albums starting with Rolling Thunder (1972). Won three Grammy Awards including Best World Music Album for Planet Drum (1991), the first Grammy in that category. Has performed in subsequent Grateful Dead-related projects including The Other Ones, The Dead, and Dead & Company. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Grateful Dead in 1994.
